We used to have a clinic in Mapleton.  We had a sandwich sign that we would put marketing messages on and place by the busy highway that ran by our clinic.  The message that got the most response was:  “Is sciatica a pain your butt?”  It got a good response because it was unexpected, humorous, and accurate.  If you have ever had sciatica you know how much suffering goes along with this disorder.

You can read my story of sciatic leg pain here.  There are many causes of sciatic leg pain and many imitators of sciatic leg pain.  To get long lasting relief you need to have a provider that can accurately diagnose the underlying cause and treat accordingly.

What is Sciatica?

True sciatica is a pain that follows the course of the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and starts in the low back and runs down the back of your leg into your feet.  The pain usually starts in the low back and travels part of the way down or all the way down the back of your leg, but the pain can just be in one part of your leg.  The pain is usually very excruciating and can feel like a horrible burning or deep ache.  You can at times also develop numbness, tingling, and or weakness in the affected leg.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica can be caused by a lot of different things including a bulging or herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, some other space occupying lesion (such as a tumor), or degenerative joint disease of the facets.  Each of these causes requires a different treatment approach that is why it’s important to come to a clinic like ours where we take the time to properly diagnose you.  You aren’t just a number to us, and we won’t try to rush you in and out.  We take our time to make sure we are doing the best job possible for you.

There also a few other things that can mimic sciatica by referring pain into the buttocks or into the back of your thigh.  These include sacroiliac (the joints on either side of your tailbone, commonly referred to as hips) and facet joint dysfunction.

As you can see sciatica is a complicated beast to tame but with the proper diagnosis it can be done.  Our doctors of chiropractic have over 20 years combined experience treating cases of sciatica.
