I honestly believe that I have the single greatest healthcare product in the world.  I get to see miracles happen every day.  I love what I do.  But one thing bugs me about what I do.  Not enough people know about it, or they are too afraid to try it.  So I will try to address some of the most common misconceptions that people have about chiropractic care so that more people can experience the awesomeness that is chiropractic.

Once you go you have to go forever.

This is a very common objection that people have to chiropractic care.  I like to answer it with another question or two:  Does your dentist expect you to get dental care for the rest of your life?  Does your eye doctor expect you to get eye care for the rest of your life?

The answer is yes of course they do.  Why is that?  Because you will always need dental and eye care to make sure you stay healthy.  Our bodies require upkeep.  Especially our spines.  So yes a good chiropractor wants to get checked on a regular basis (at least a few times a year) to make sure your spine stays healthy.  Even the ones that don’t tell you to do this, are usually doing it for themselves.

I can’t afford it

This is also a pretty common misconception.  Let me first say, hopefully without sounding too judgemental, we afford what’s important to us.  So if getting healthier and having less pain and being able to do things in life are important to you, you can and will find a way to make it happen.  Ok, I will get off my soapbox and get back to the blog post at hand…

Chiropractic care is one of the best deals in health care today.  The average visit to a chiropractor costs around $50.  And that’s without any insurance coverage.  Copays and insurance write-offs often help to bring that cost down further.  Even people with high deductibles will have an HSA set up to pay for out off pocket healthcare costs.  So to help put this in perspective let’s compare a few things.  If you go the medical route for say low back pain and sciatic leg pain, you will most likely get a prescription for a potent NSAID/narcotic and/or muscle relaxers.  When that doesn’t “fix” the problem, you will probably get an MRI.  On average, an MRI costs $2600.  You can see me a whole lot and not spend $2600.  AND I will actually help your body heal the problem naturally with chiropractic care.

It hurts, or it’s dangerous

I won’t lie, sometimes getting adjusted does hurt.  Some people feel a little worse after their first adjustment.  But the soreness is usually very short-lived, most of the time only a few seconds.  In a large study that was reported on WebMD, it was found that chiropractors enjoyed a 95% patient satisfaction rate.  Would that number be so crazy high if all we did was hurt or maimed people?  (Hint the answer is no!)  Also, my malpractice insurance premiums are ridiculously low.  If chiropractic was dangerous, buying malpractice insurance would be whole lot more expensive.
